Retail Shop Team Member (UPDATE - POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED; STAY TUNED, HIRING PART-TIME POSITIONS SOON-ish)

We are currently looking to have an incredible individual join our retail team! The position requires quite a bit of physical activity, mental prowress, technological savvy, attention to detail, awareness, and the ability to handle ALL the personalities. Applicants should already love what Drygoods does and represents, as well have a sound working knowledge of fabric, sewing and ideally, knitting and yarn as well.

Drygoods Design is hiring! Who’s the right candidate? A dynamic, engaging individual who knows of the shop, loves working with people, fabric, fiber, and all the goodies that make making fun. In addition, the ideal candidate is a strong communicator, understands and embraces technology, proactively approaches challenges and/or anything that falls amiss, a strong attention to detail, and maintains a kind, calm, and welcoming presence.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Work with owner/manager to determine priorities and tasks for the day/week

  • Create and maintain a clean, well-organized shop floor and workstation(s)

  • Handle remote customer communications throughout each work day by both phone and email

  • Communicate with owner/manager inventory needs and fill in product

  • Daily stocking of cash wrap, packaging supplies, and back stock of applicable products

  • Package and process online/phone orders with care, speed, and accuracy

  • Offer kind, welcoming service to customers in the store during each shop shift

  • Accurately and diligently maintains sales records and all transactions

  • When time and need allows, assists in the creation and production of shop displays, samples and merchandising

  • Frequent upkeep of store-to-site information and product listing management

  • Able to work independently

Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrated and proven sewing experience, and solid understanding of fabrics both by use and common terms – you can handle all levels of questions that might come up when a customer is seeking help and advice on a current or potential project

  • General knowledge of yarn and knitting (demonstrated and proven experience in knitting is preferred) - you understand the basics and want to learn more

  • Demonstrated and superb customer service skills – whether it’s the kindest or less so customer you know how to keep your cool and handle the situation with kindness held first and foremost

  • Previous and successful (enjoyed) retail experience in bigger box or smaller retail settings (previous fabric store or craft store preferred)

  • Previous experience with more robust Point of Sale technology and can also use personal phone to access timekeeping, scheduling, and communication apps that are used by the shop

  • Demonstrated experience in professional settings for email, meetings, and phone etiquette

  • Can lift at least 20 to 30 pounds on a regular basis and be on feet for several hours per day

  • Acknowledgement that racism exists and work on a daily basis to create an anti-racist space, for customers and fellow co-workers

Schedule and hours

  • Full-time, 40 hours per week -- Tuesday through Saturday – 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with four hours of working on the shop floor welcoming, assisting, and providing excellent service to customers and visitors. Most months will also include a Saturday off for a bonus three-day weekend.

  • If the schedule is to change as the shop shifts and adapts to a changing world post-covid, staff will be given at least a month’s notice.

  • Compensation is market competitive and there are a few other perks. Currently heath care benefits are not available.

  • Once candidate is selected, job would start as soon as possible
